E. J. Smith was the logical choice to captain Titanic, since the previous year he successfully steamed Olympic (Titanic’s sister ship of identical size proportions) from Southampton to New York and back. Moreover, Captain Smith was not on the bridge when the iceberg was sighted and any evasive actions taken to avoid it were not given by him. Instead it was the First Officer Murdoch that gave the orders and sealed Titanic’s fate.
