Antarctica is rich in fossils. The problem is (as you noted) that it's almost totally covered by ice. Who knows how many amazing discoveries are waiting to be made there. As for the terror-birds, it's not impossible to have been the apex predators of the continent since the could have migrated there from South America. They were indeed incredible creatures.
